Proximity sensors are used to detect the presence of NEARBY objects without any physical contact. These ranges include both INDUCTIVE (sensing metal targets) as well as CAPACITIVE (sensing other targets – eg. plastic) sensors.The nominal sensing range (maximum distance) is determined by the body diameter of the sensors – i.e. larger diameters = longer sensing ranges. Mounting variations also determine sensing range – i.e. flush-mount = short range / NON-flush mount = longer range.Proximity sensors can have a high reliability and long life due to the fact that there are no mechanical parts to wear out, nor damage due to physical contact with a target.
